Kirkuk

The modern and more frequently used name for Arrapha, a Hurrian and Assyrian city located on the Hasa River about 155 miles (250 km) north of modern Baghdad. The site of Arappha was occupied as early as the fifth millennium b.c. Atsomepoint in the second millennium b.c., migrating Hurrians established a small kingdom or city-state centered on Arrapha, which seems to have been subject to the larger Hurrian state of Mitanni, situated to its west. By the tenth century b.c. Arappha had been absorbed by the Assyrians and remained part of the Assyrian Empire for several centuries.
